Emerge Events

A new series of tailored events, which have been developed in response to artists’ suggestions from the first Emerge Conference in November 2005, will take place across the project Boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Enfield, Haringey and Harrow during May and June 2006.

The cost of attending each event is £5, sign up for all five, and get one free!

Event 1- Opening event, Monday 15 May, 6.30-8.30pm. Barnet, Arts Depot

This opening event will bring back together groups and individuals who met at the first Emerge Conference.  Artquest will be there to offer advice and guidance on their services and opportunities for artists, and there will be an update on the Emerge project as a whole and from representatives of the new Emerge networks.  Following the presentations and discussion, Tracey Lazurus, Visual and Public Arts Coordinator will provide a tour of ‘Creative Routes’ the current Arts Depot exhibition.  The evening will be rounded up with informal networking in the bar.

Event 2 - Funding, Saturday 20 May, 3-5pm. Harrow, University of Westminster

This presentation and discussion will focus on the major funding scheme for individual artists, Arts Council England’s ‘Grants for the Arts’.  Tammara Mattingly from Harrow Visual Arts Forum, will be present to talk about HVAF’s experiences of setting up and maintaining a support network for artists.   The event will continue at the University, moving to London Gallery West for a glass of wine and tour of the exhibition ‘After Art School’ by Mark Wilsher, the exhibition’s curator and Fine Art Alumni Network coordinator.

Event 3 - Community Arts, Arts in Education, Monday 5 June, 6.30-8.30 pm, Enfield, Millfield House

Bringing together artists and commissioners, this event will raise and discuss issues around commissioning art work, combining an individual arts practice with art in education, and experiences of getting started in working in educational settings.  Guest speakers are Janice McLaren, Projects Organiser, The Photographers' Gallery who has initiated unique one off projects with photographic artists, artist Faisal Abdullah, who has just completed an education project with the Serpentine Gallery and Othello De-Souza, photographer, featured in Arts Depot exhibition, 'Creative Routes'.

Event 4 – Marketing, Thursday 15 June, 6.30-8.30pm, Haringey, Karamel Club

An informal discussion and workshop event designed to help artists focus on their existing networks, how to expand them, and how to set and achieve your goals as a practitioner.  Brent artist David Blandy, currently showing at Gasworks gallery, will talk about his career to date, and his approach to promoting and marketing his work.  Followed, of course, by ‘networking in the bar’!

Event 5 – Public Art, Wed 21 June, 6.30 – 8.30pm, Brent, Patidar House 

The final event of the series brings together a vibrant mix of public art commissioners and producing agencies and practitioners.  Speakers include; Isabel Vasseur, who pioneered the public art movement in the UK and is now Director of public art agency ArtOffice, Abi Palmer, Arts Development Officer, Brent Council, talking about plans for the area and new commissions, and Binita Walia, artist, sharing her experiences of commissions for public settings.
