  Emerge Conference
The Emerge Conference took place on 12 November 2005 at the Arts Depot, North Finchley, and was the starting point for the Emerge project. The conference provided an opportunity for artists, advice organisations and local arts development officers to come together to discuss the key question ‘How can we create a thriving community of visual artists in North and West London?’

Speakers on the day included Stephen Beddoe from Artquest - www.artquest.org.uk, an Emerge project partner, Artquest provides advice and information to London’s visual arts sector, Emila Telese, a cross disciplinary artist who combines her arts practice with her role as Artists’ Networks Coordinator for a-n the Artists’ Information Company’ – see www.a-n.co.uk click on ‘Networking’ , Jo Joelson, co-founder of London Fieldworks, an organisation set up to develop multidisciplinary collaboration - www.londonfieldworks.com, Niki Russell from Reactor, an artist led organisation that specialises in extraordinary site-specific events – www.reactorweb.com, and Becky Shaw, an artist using live works, photography and text to explore the relationship between the individual and society, who is co-director of Static Gallery in Liverpool - www.static-ops.org. For more information on speakers see the downloadable document on this page ‘Speakers Biographies’. Stands at the day included Artquest, CIDA, Collage Arts, Prevista and Brent Artists’ Register.

Emerge Outcomes
Artists’ responses to the key opening question were developed in ‘Open Space’ sessions led by Martin Leith. 20 groups of artists met during the afternoon to discuss ideas proposed by individuals at the conference, these included ‘Setting up a mural network’, ‘A network for travelling exhibitions’, ‘Sci-Art, projects and funding’ and ‘Network of Women Artists’. 14 of these groups were interested in having some form of ongoing connection.

Details of all these groups, including a contact email address, where the group is ongoing, can be found on the downloadable pdf ‘Open Space Outcomes’

The conference received great feedback from the artists at the conference, 52% said it mostly fulfilled their expectations, and 28% said it completely fulfilled them. Reasons for attending included ‘Networking, being inspired’ and ‘To meet other artists and explore new opportunities’. Please see the downloadable file ‘Conference Evaluations’ for more information.

Emerge Future
Artists were keen for similar events to be arranged in the near future, with ideas for satellite events in the boroughs including advice on funding, more networking opportunities, and opportunities to critique work with other artists. All the ideas and suggestions from the day are being used to inform the Emerge project over the next few months, and artists are welcome to contact the project coordinator with other suggestions – please email your ideas to Melanie Stidolph, melanie@emergelondon.co.uk.
